About 80% Are Asymptomatic! How Much Do You Know About Endometrial Polyps?
Today, we would like to share one of the most common procedures among the hundreds of hysteroscopic surgeries performed by Dr. Yi-Liang Li each year: endometrial polyp removal.
The overall prevalence of endometrial polyps is approximately 7.8–40%. Around 82% of cases have no symptoms, and the incidence increases with age. Endometrial polyps are commonly seen in patients with obesity, irregular ovulation, infertility, or those using Tamoxifen.
Although most cases are asymptomatic, about 18% may experience intermenstrual bleeding, menstrual abnormalities, or infertility. In particular, postmenopausal bleeding should always be further evaluated.
It is also important to note that having polyps does not necessarily mean there will be bleeding. Clinically, abnormal bleeding can also occur even when no polyps are present.
Not all polyps require treatment. Around 25% may disappear naturally. Whether surgery is needed depends mainly on symptoms, whether the polyp affects pregnancy, and whether there is any risk of malignancy.
As shown in this video case, cold knife hysteroscopic surgery can usually be completed in about 5–8 minutes. It involves almost no wound, minimal bleeding, and patients can often return to daily activities on the same day.
